Ethnicity has been a central aspect of community policing in American history. How the policing process regards members of a given ethnic faction has been as essential as the crime deterrence itself. This history is significant to society both to promote cohesion and harmony. Trends indicate that a nation can never construct an integrated community on distorted foundations. It takes the admission of historical injustices to steer society to the right course of policymaking and governance. The wounds often reopen when unjust and historically familiar police treatments are implied to subsequent generations. A review of the historical evolution of policing is essential for demonstrating the role of communication in improving police service.
The conception of America as a homogenous society was undoubtedly one of the deterrence of proper community policing. Barlow and Barlow (2018) assert that race relations are central to understanding the role of police in society. The logic backs the claim that the evolution of community policing cannot be exclusive to the overall society evolution. Over the years, American society has witnessed gradual efforts for combating racial discrimination. As a result, experts regard the contemporary community as multicultural rather than homogenous. However, one can trace the potential for subtle discriminatory acts back to the previous systems. It is such anticipation that warrants the topic for continuous discourse. The subtle discriminatory acts may include a dramatic and unprecedented increase in surveillance, arrest, detention, and incarceration of marginalized communities due to sinister motivations rather than legal procedural demands. The acts are justified by stereotyping, which is interestingly not unique to the criminal justice system but is generally noticeable in society (Stevens, 2017). The observation demonstrates that the police systems do not exclusively invent the challenge. However, it is difficult to determine whether the institutions influence the society and the culture or the society that controls them.
