Nurses might find it challenging to admit that they engage in bias unconsciously when attending to their patients. However, implicit bias and stereotyping necessitate that nurses acknowledge and recognize the uncertainties that result in bias, stereotyping, and implicit bias. Therefore, they should assess the healthcare facility's culture and develop relevant strategies to combat the menace of bias and stereotyping. Implicit bias in healthcare involves the unconscious prejudice that healthcare practitioners might feel and express towards their patients or policies (Marcelin et al., 2019). In healthcare, the nurse should recognize that biases and stereotypes emerge from different circumstances, such as nurses judging patients based on their race, gender, social class, weight, and age, among others. It means that nurses can avoid unconscious prejudice by adopting self-awareness and emotional intelligence skills. The skills will help them understand that they have biased perspectives about a certain demographic of patients and mannerisms that might affect the quality delivery of care services.
Community health nurses should consciously eliminate negative evaluations about their patients no matter their physical appearance, social or financial background. First, nurses need to discourage healthcare inequalities (Flynn et al., 2018). Eliminating these biases and stereotyping demands that nurses build a competent culture within the healthcare facility. Cultural competence starts with lobbying for equitable patient care as the primary objective of quality care improvement.
