The effectiveness of a group depends on the leadership skills because it addresses group resistance. A group leader can eliminate delays, especially when handling new group members by sticking to the group agenda and managing the behavior of the group members. Leaders should also encourage members to be good listeners, active participants, and timekeepers (Gallon, 2004). Thus, effective group leaders are patient, respect the group members, and do not quickly become angry when criticized.
Stages of Group Development
Group development takes place in five distinct stages. Stage one: this is known as the acquaintance stage where the group members familiarize themselves with the group and get to know each other. During this period, the group leaders should encourage interaction among the members and assist in setting norms.
