Democracy presents fundamental values for humanity, including equality, equity, social justice, free and fair elections, and freedom of speech. Any practice that erodes these values automatically becomes a threat to democracy. Mettler and Lieberman (2020) underline rising economic equality as one of the four threats to democracy. Economic inequality arises when resources are distributed unequally without minding that everybody is equal before the law. In addition, unfair taxation is also a contributing factor to inequality since a person earning more money and earning less cannot have the same or almost similar tax rates. As a result, this paper focuses on expounding on how the rising economic inequality is a threat to democracy and its cons.
