The forces that push us together and those that push us apart are prevalent in my community. It is easy to see in my community how engagement and capitalism push us together. We purchase goods and services from people of different cultures, and in the process, we communicate and create important relationships. In this case, I can say that the forces that push us together promote intercultural contact. This is consistent with the description by Lustig and Koester (2013), which asserts that the economic interdependence of today's world nurtures and sustains the forces that bring us together. On the other, the forces that push us apart, such as spirituality and tribalism, are somewhat common. People from one spiritual group may consider those from other groups wrong, and as a result, intercultural contact is minimized.
