European Environments

Essay Instructions:

For this assignment, you will choose a current issue connected to the topics we have discussed in this section of the class—namely, Europe as a culture realm, European environments, population, and human-environment interactions—to research further. More specifically, you will be examining how this issue is discussed in news media. To do this, you will need to find at least 3 news articles on your topic and summarize their viewpoints, identifying where their positions overlap and where they contradict each other. Some guidelines to keep in mind: • Please note that this is not like a typical 5-paragraph essay where you are asked to describe an issue and list 3 references. Here you are writing about your issue as seen through the lens of your articles. In this sense, your assignment is almost as much about the articles you’re citing as it is the issue itself. • Keep in mind that this is a news discussion, so we want to pick issues that are relatively current. You will therefore want to choose articles that are no more than 10 years old. • Some good places to look for articles are the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Economist, among others. You might also consider various European newspapers (e.g., Le Monde, The Telegraph, Der Spiegel. Dagens Nyheter ), as long as you are able to read them mostly on your own (i.e., without the help of Google Translate, et al., since machine translation can result in some hilarious mix-ups). If you are not sure whether your article comes from a reputable source, please feel free to ask me. • In-text citations: When you include direct quotes from the articles, be sure to put them in quotation marks and specify the source. Similarly, when you paraphrase a statement from an article, be sure to specify which article you are citing. • Be sure to cite all sources on a separate page at the end of your assignment. This should not be just a list of links, but an actual formatted bibliography (see example on next page). Any citation style is fine, as long as you are consistent. If you have no preference, APA style is fine. DO NOT JUST COPY AND PASTE LINKS. • Your assignment should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins and a 12 pt standard font. • Please submit your assignment through Canvas by 5 pm CST. Please be sure to save your file as a Word document, a PDF, or a .odt file to ensure that I can open it. If you submit it as a Pages file, it will not be graded. • Suggested structure (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED): 1 paragraph introducing your issue, 1 paragraph for each article that briefly summarizes what it is saying, and 1-2 closing paragraphs that explain what viewpoints your articles have in common and where they differ. Some resources you may find useful: • Media Bias Fact Check • Miller Writing Center • Grammarly, “5 Most Effective Methods for Avoiding Plagiarism” • Zotero (reference management system that makes citing sources a breeze, highly recommended)

Europe is a continent with a wide variety of complex and dynamic environments, ranging from icy Arctic regions to the Mediterranean coastline. Most of Europe is characterized by temperate climates, with Atlantic coastal regions featuring milder temperatures and the interior areas featuring harsher climates. Europe is home to various habitats, including extensive forests, grasslands, and wetlands. The continent is also home to multiple species, including some endangered species, such as the Iberian lynx, the European bison, and the Eurasian lynx. Climate change is a significant challenge facing Europe. The continent is expected to experience rising temperatures, increased precipitation, and extreme weather events in the coming decades, likely impacting Europe's environment significantly (Celli et al., 2021).
The article by Milne et al. (2022) examines the geologic processes of magmatism in the "Newer Granites" of the northern Scottish Highlands. The authors used data from the Cluanie and Clunes plutons to understand the magmatism believed to have occurred during the Caledonian hot zone. They found that the magmatism occurred via an intrusive process involving the intrusion of magma within a pre-existing crust. The authors also found that the magmatism resulted in a complex crystalline fabric with various minerals. The authors concluded that the "Newer Granites" magmatism was likely associated with the Caledonian orogeny and played an essential role in forming the Highlands.
The article by Celli et al. (2021) discusses the effects of the Iceland Plume on the North Atlantic evolution and magmatism. The authors suggest that the plume is "tilted," meaning that its underlying mantle is inclined relative to the lithospheric plate in the North Atlantic region. This phenomenon is believed to have caused a wide range of volcanoes and magmatic plumes, leading to the formation of Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and other volcanic regions. Furthermore, the authors hypothesize that this plume may have contributed to the tectonic and magmatic evolution of the North Atlantic region over the last several million years. Finally, the tilted plume may also significantly impact regional climate patterns, as it can influence the formation of clouds and atmospheric circulation.
The article by Panin et al. (2020) examines the Middle and Late Quaternary glacial lake-outburst floods, drainage diversions, and reorganization of fluvial systems in northwestern Eurasia. It suggests that these events have significantly changed the region's landscape, affected the fluvial systems, and caused the drainage diversions and reorganization of the rivers. The authors also suggest that these changes have impacted the environment and ecosystems, influencing the region's environment. Additionally, they discuss the impact of climate change on these processes, their implications, and their potential to cause further envi...
