The environmental history of the CWM landfill area is filled with violations and penalties that help to showcase how people’s lives have been endangered over the past two decades. Before running out of space in 2015, this landfill area accepted toxic waste and materials from the United States and Canada. Having anticipated that they would soon run out of space, the company started applying for a permit so that it could be allowed to build another landfill. Well, things have not been promising for the company as their application lies pending at the Sitting Board. Well, it remains to be seen whether the application will be accepted or not but there is no denying that the people around the landfill area have been greatly affected.
There are several environmental issues associated with the landfill area. One of them is spills which the company has been accused severally of doing. It has been claimed time and again that CWM had been discharging wastewater into the Twelve Mile Creek. Twelve Mile creek serves as a tributary to the great Niagara River. Aside from spills, the company is also known for storing toxic waste in leaking drums. These often leak and, in the end, spill thus discharging foam and gases that greatly pollute the environment.
