A therapist-client relationship can be terminated if the client has made progress towards treatment goals or if the client has improved and he or she no longer requires the clinical services (Felton & Polowy, 2016). When preparing the client for discharge, the counselor should have final meetings with the patient to assess the entire process before concluding treatment. The therapist can assure the client continuing therapy if the client needs it the in future.

The psychotherapist should take reasonable measures to avoid abandoning their clients who may still require their assistance. Before discharging the clients, the social workers should carefully consider all aspects in the given situation to reduce possible adverse effects, and they should make appropriate arrangements for the continuation of the services when necessary. For example, the therapist can provide referrals to numerous mental health specialists with phone numbers and addresses (Felton & Polowy, 2016).
