Response to Question: is everyone a good coach?
I do not think all coaches are good listeners. If all coaches were good listeners, everything would be outstanding. This means they are not and we should not anticipate them to be especially at the start of their journey into coaching. Each person has their strengths and areas to improve. Without listening skills, it is not possible to explore goals and events in coachees’ lives because without them, the coach shall be unable to create an intervention on real coachee needs in place of the coach’s pre-established programme.

Bacharach presents coaches as pragmatic leaders who must have 5 essential skills to enable them succeed. She identifies them as listening with curiosity, takers of what they hear, and reflectors with accuracy, and questioners for exploration and providers of feedback for development purposes. Thus, the author believes that if a coach listens, reflects, questions, and provides the right feedback, they can simply build trust in the coaching relation.
