Language is a complex and multifaceted ability that is fundamental to human communication and social interaction. The ability to learn, understand, and use language is a uniquely human trait that has allowed people to convey meaning, express emotions, and share information across cultures and time. In recent years, researchers have sought to better understand the cognitive abilities of non-human animals in relation to language learning and acquisition. This paper explores whether animals can learn human language using the evidence from various studies to better understand the cognitive abilities of animals in relation to language acquisition.
Knowing a human language means having the ability to communicate effectively. It involves understanding its grammar and syntax, and to use words and phrases in a meaningful way (Berwick & Chomsky, 2016). Language knowledge also encompasses the ability to use it in a contextually appropriate manner, and to understand and interpret the nuances of meaning conveyed through language. It involves the ability to learn and use language in a creative and flexible way, and to adapt language use to different social situations and audiences. Language knowledge is acquired through a combination of innate abilities, social interaction, and cognitive processes such as attention, memory, and reasoning (Berwick & Chomsky, 2016). Thus, knowing a human language is a complex process that is crucial for interaction with the immediate environment.
The studies by Kaminski et al. and Terrace provide valuable insights into the potential for animals to learn and use language, and the limitations of their ability to do so. According to Kaminski et al. (2004), a Border Collie named Rico was able to learn and remember the names of more than 200 objects, including unfamiliar ones, through a process of inference known as fast mapping. Rico was able to associate novel words with novel objects after just one exposure, demonstrating his ability to learn words and make associations between them and objects.
