In April 1987, former Minister of Environment, Gro Harlem Brundtland, presented the result of the World Commission on Environment and Development to the United Nations, which she administered for three intense years. Initially titled “Our Common Future,” the report would later be rapidly identified as the “Brundtland Report.” Chronicled by twenty-three experts from twenty-two different countries, it formally defined sustainable development for the first time: the “Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
