AGBELL has historically been and still is a BIG topic in the deaf community.
For example, The Alexander Graham Bell Association of the Deaf (AGBELL) has claimed for many years that deaf children should not use ASL at birth and it would impact deaf children’s spoken language abilities. They also tell families to only use ASL if spoken language fails and ASL should be seen as a tool that deaf children can use when they are older (after acquiring spoken language). AGBELL is a powerful organization that has led many families to avoid using ASL with their deaf children. The deaf community worldwide has responded in protest that their frequent claims towards hearing families are misleading and their research is misrepresented and has caused more harm than good.

The Alexander Graham Bell Association, also known as A.G.Bell, founded in 1908, is a renowned organization whose objective is to assist people with hearing disabilities through speech and listening techniques. However, the organization is controversial as it campaigns against using sign languages, claiming they are detrimental to children's speech and listening development (Gallaudet University Linguistic Department, 2016). With Washington D.C. headquarters, and a network of international and local branches, A.G. Bell has positioned itself as a powerful deaf and hard-to-hearing organization globally. Despite A.G.Bell’s achievements in listening and speaking, sign languages are crucial to opening up new avenues for the hard-to-hear.
