About Nebraska Correctional Institutions
The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) is the accredited institution charged with incarcerating convicted criminals in the state of Nebraska. As one of the largest organizations in the state, it came into existence in 1856 when a decision to establish a penitentiary was made. Under the leadership of director Scott Frakes, the agency strives to keep the state’s population safe by confining over four thousand inmates in its system with the help of more than 2,300 workers (Nebraska Dept. of Correctional Services, 2021, “a”).
The inmates, both male and female, are restricted in ten institutions, namely, the Community Corrections Center-Lincoln, Community Corrections Center-Omaha, Diagnostic & Evaluation Center, Lincoln Correctional Center, Nebraska State Penitentiary, Work Ethic Camp, Nebraska Correctional Center for Women, Omaha Correctional Center, Nebraska Correctional Youth Facility and Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (Nebraska Dept. of Correctional Services, 2021, “b”).
According to the NDCS website, the ten facilities take in about 5,540 inmates per day and eighty-nine persons jailed in county jails (Nebraska Dept. of Correctional Services, 2021, “a”). The inmates are institutionalized here for crimes against other people, drug, property, and sex crimes and will serve a life sentence or different years depending on the offense. Death row is also another sentence some inmates serve despite executions ending in 2011.
