The year is 1900 and your name is Johann S. Bach. You are the Program Director for Reichspublikradio (Imperial Public Radio), based in Berlin. Last month, IPR aired a special broadcast titled “The Jewish Question: What Is It and How Shall It Be Solved?” The entire broadcast consisted of someone reading a long and very nasty sermon about the “Jewish problem” in Germany, given years ago by the Kaiser’s former court preacher, Rev. Adolf Stoecker. The broadcast received favorable responses from some listeners and cries of outrage from others. Many Jews, in particular, wrote in to say that this was a grossly antisemitic program and they were deeply offended. You have therefore put together a special broadcast for this evening, titled “Jews Speak About the ‘Jewish Question’: A Response to Antisemitism.” You have put together a panel discussion with quite an interesting lineup of speakers. One of them is Mr. Yaakov Ben-Aharon (formerly Yankel Aronovitch):  Eighteen years ago Mr. Ben-Aharon was one of the original Lovers of Zion who went to the Land of Israel after the first pogroms, to rebuild the Jewish nation.  After many years of hardships he returned to Russia to organize more young people, and then in 1897 was a delegate to the First Zionist Congress in Basle, where he got to know the charismatic Theodor Herzl.  Ben-Aharon is now working full time for Herzl’s new Zionist movement, but like most of the Russian Jews involved in it, he insists that speaking Hebrew and settling only in the Land of Israel are essential.

The Jewish question or problem was a question of Jewish minorities’ presence in society and how the issue could be solved. This query arose in the era when the Jews were being given civil rights and equality. For them to assimilate into society, they were expected to abandon their behaviors, cultures, traditions, and religion. Adolf Stoecker’s anti-Semitism focused on denouncing the civil rights of the Jews by describing them as political nationalists who aimed at turning against the government by establishing the Jewish state. Adolf believed that Jews were a separate race from the Germans and that their behavior, culture, and traditions were unchangeable.
He argued that the Jews should be denied the right to citizenship. Instead, they were to reside in Germany as guests with special laws for aliens. While the alienated Jews in the United States were granted citizenship, they lived in constant fear of losing it in the question of Jews being a nation and not a religion. A government minister in Russia indicated that for them to assimilate into the society, some would starve, emigrate back, accept the alienation, or become citizens. This was an attempt to solve the Jewish problem. Therefore, Jews immigrated to Europe and Germany because the American reform rejected their tradition than the European reform. The former insisted on alienating the Jewish community for them to attain civil rights.
