What new things have you been surprised to learn about Jesus’ Last week of Life and how has this influenced your understanding of Jesus and his mission?
Jesus’ death was by design. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, it was clear that Jesus would die for the sins of the world. However, what surprised me while learning about His last week was the fact that Jesus causing a disruption also happened by design and that it is the act that set His death in motion. Jesus gave hints and clues to His disciples concerning His death. However, He did not indicate which actions brought Him closer to His death. But, while learning about His last week, it is clear that His entry into Jerusalem and disruption of the Temple was by design. His actions while at the Temple and what followed after are a clear indication that Jesus was acting in line with God’s will.
From the disorganization of the Temple, the trade happening inside, and the people’s quest for money and material wealth, everything was by design. Jesus was to find the Temple just as He did, and His actions were to spark action from His enemies. After the disruption He caused in the Temple, His enemies found reasons to plot His death and destruction. Jesus knew all about their plot and hence His decision to go with His disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus was fulfilling God’s will and affirming what had been prophesied before His arrival.
His mission on earth had to be fulfilled. My understanding of his mission has been enhanced because of the understanding that it had to happen regardless of the pain and shame He faced. Also, Jesus was fully bound to His mission, and though it was...
