In Friedrich Nietzsche’s “Genealogy of Morality”, essay 2 section 18, there is focus on creating bad conscience is closely linked to the instinct of freedom where the state dominates the weak and overpowers them and the people then turn inwards. The instinct for freedom is the will to power and the instinct for freedom is in the form of violent instincts that create negative ideals, and these instincts are suppressed in a society (Nietzsche, 1996). Artists are some of the people who exercise freedom over what they do and just as they control their works they exercise control over themselves. In distinguishing between good and bad conscience, Nietzsche highlights that one has power over oneself and fate, and artists are like the beasts of prey where repression of the instinct of freedom results in selflessness and self-sacrifice
