Christians’ view of spirituality is related to God, one’s soul, and the afterlife. In Christianity, spirituality and ethics are related (Naugle, 2003). The reason is that Christians use spirituality to differentiate the ethical from the unethical. For instance, in Christianity, a married man or woman knows that they are not supposed to have extramarital affairs. This law is clearly stated among the ten commandments. Therefore, when a married man or woman acts against this law, they act against their spiritual self. Hence, when they confess, they are advised to seek forgiveness from God through prayer to redeem their soul. Redeeming one’s soul means salvaging one’s spirituality, which determines right and wrong.
Postmodernism is a period that has been characterized by an increased emphasis on people’s worldviews (Zardosht, 2020). When the world seems to be getting more complex, people’s worldviews are becoming extremely important. It helps to have different world perspectives to make better sense of it. In healthcare, postmodern relativism has also gained an impressive tract. Doctors and nurses are being trained to listen to the different perspectives of their patients (Zardosht, 2020). Throughout the years, experts have found that listening to patients helps develop comprehensive treatment programs. This is unlike early periods when doctors and nurses held complete and absolute authority over the health of their patients (Zardosht, 2020). Today, a patient does not have to worry about whether or not they are receiving quality healthcare because their opinions or thoughts are now taken seriously by providers.
Scientism is the broader version of science. While science attempts to establish universal facts through data, scientism draws more general positions about the cosmos (Burnett, 2012). Scientism has been the leading way of thought since the period of enlightenment. Scientists hold that science is the only true way of explaining the world. Hence, scientists have degraded other important fields of study such as poetry, humanities, and the arts (Burnett, 2012). Therefore, one of the main arguments against scientism is that it is not the sole explainer of human behavior (Hughes, 2012). Poetry, art, music, and film are all part of man’s most natural abilities, i.e., creativity, imagination, talent, and memory. Our natural abilities and talents allow us to study each other, make observations, and, thus, conclude human behavior. Hence, downgrading fields such as art and music does not help our understanding of the world. Scientism also tends to downgrade religion (Hughes, 2012). As history has shown, science had a particular hold on religion during the enlightenment. In France, some catholic churches were converted to “temples of reason” (Burnett, 2012). Yet, today, the catholic church still exists. This shows that it is unfitting and impossible to explain the world using only one discipline.
