Since the discovery of how biology influences psychology, the field of psychology has made enormous strides and now has its own field of study. Biological psychology is a subfield of psychology that concentrates on neurological psychology and physiological elements that affect the mind (Biological psychology video). A number of psychological and biological advancements have been made since that time, such as the connection between depression and genetics/heredity (Sciencentral, 2009). Many studies, especially those involving identical twins, have shown that genetics significantly impact the development of behavior, cognition, and mental illness (Behavioral genetics video). These examinations have also been conducted in the context of adoptive families when the biological parents' nurturing influence has been eliminated from the situation.
In the wake of Charles Darwin's famous nature vs. nurture argument, scientists have been investigating the relationship between our genetic make-up and the things we are exposed to in our everyday lives with people of all ages. Eustress (good stress) and distress (bad stress) play a crucial role in our everyday lives (negative stress). In addition to headaches and physical problems, stress may cause a broad range of biological and psychological reactions. Psychiatrists may examine the psychological implications of physiologic changes in a person who is showing signs of stress.
