One of the best things that I like from taking up Psychology courses, is that their practical applications exceed far more than just my career. Knowing concepts, theories, and methods in Psychology can easily make anyone more adept at understanding others, bettering their lives, and helping other people, just through a simple interaction with one another. For one, I loved social psychology the most because it makes me think that I and others are all part of a “bigger system”. However, as compared to Sociology, Anthropology, and other fields of the social sciences, Social psychology shows how people would act when in a group, act as a group (based on how each unit perceive each other, of course), and act for the group. One of the main concepts that I like with the field of Social Psychology is “Attribution theory.” This theory is mainly concerned with how “people explain the behavior of others.” But, what makes this more interesting is that the theory itself could be used for many other applications out there, such as in our daily life and other fields. I’m referring to other fields because, I do believe that one of the importance of Psychology or Social Psychology is to be able to help answer the questions which other fields might not (or as a complementary) be able to answer on their own. As an example, the field of Sociology has ‘Symbolic Interactionism’ as one of its greatest paradigms still being used today. Symbolic Interactionism, states that people, create their own meanings and act according to the meanings that they created. Well, this is just the tip of this theory, but in line with Social Psychology, I believe that tenets and methods of getting information using the Attribution theory, could be help to further improve research in the Sociological field.
Another one of my favorite subjects that I’ve taken is Interviewing and Counseling skills. I really liked this class because I believe that I can use the techniques eve outside of a mental health clinic. Whether for a friend, a love one, a colleague, etc. I know that the skills that I’ve acquired from this class could be further used into making other people happier and better.
