Denzel is a character in the flight that struggles with alcoholism and the abuse of drugs. Despite having issues with drugs and alcohol, he is capable of successfully finishing his flights. However, his luck was over when the plane experienced a mechanical malfunction sending it hurtling towards the ground. The character used to smoke cigarettes, use cocaine, and drink regularly before flying the plane. The nature of Denzel Washington is a pilot dealing with some problems. Whip Whitaker manages to land a plane with engine malfunction saving all the passengers and only six casualties.
The character needs addiction therapy to treat substance disorders. I would apply cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to treat the character's substance use disorder as a therapist. It entails altering the behavior by addressing and changing questionable thinking. According to CBT, relapse does not begin when the character starts using alcohol, and it started earlier when he used poor skills to respond to negative emotions and stress (NIDA, 2018). I would use several CBT approaches to work on the character to facilitate his recovery. First, I would identify the high-risk situation for the character. The high-risk situations might form external forces such as work pressure or internal experiences such as depression. These are experiences witnessed by folks in recovery where they get cravings and urges to use the addictive materials. After identification of high-risk situations, I would develop schemes to avoid the high-risk scenarios. The scenarios are the easiest way to cope with substance disorders when they are generally avoided.
