The client with whom I have a meeting for psychological counseling is an adolescent African-American university student (Mark) who has been studying in an academic culture characterized by the domination of white students. He has been getting psychiatric assistance from clinical psychologists, and for the same reason, my discussion with him reveals that he shows positive signs of recovery from multiple symptoms. For instance, Mark feels better about his previous delusion regarding white peers as he deemed them hostile toward him; however, his current recovery indicators reveal that he has developed the ability to live within a dominating opposite cultural environment. Moreover, unlike his previous attitude of resistance to instructions, Mark now shows docility towards instructions.
Before getting psychological treatment and counseling, Mark lived a highly disorganized life characterized by his disheveled appearance, as he deliberately neglected his personal hygiene. However, my meeting with Mark about his recovery process reveals that he has changed his lifestyle by focusing on his personal appearance. At a personal level, Mark was a highly reserved and shy student, as indicated by his lack of eye contact and inability to change his facial expression as per the situation. Nevertheless, one of the positive symptoms of his recovery from schizophrenia is that he now feels more confident and more often displays confident and curious eye contact with peers and teachers (Tasijawa et al., 2023). Finally, he has shown remarkable development, as indicated by his remarkable and unusual interest in games and social activities.
Based on this engagement with Mark, I must affirm that Mark shows prominent signs of recovery from schizophrenia in line with crucial principles of psychiatric care; he shows an acute desire to change and positively expect a change in his psychological condition (Vita & Barlati, 2018). Moreover, he is working positively towards gaining self-efficacy. Hence, the following paragraphs highlight crucial principles of psychiatric care to evaluate the level and compliance of Mark’s recovery experience with them.
One of the core principles of psychiatric care is that the person must analyze, acknowledge, and appreciate their culture to relate positively to other cultures, especially the dominant culture (Barrett et al., 2013). Since Mark has shown positive signs of change by learning how to relate his African-American culture with the dominant white culture in the university, he no longer considers white students hostile toward them.
