Reflexive attention is one of the processes that help facilitate the cognitive processes of the mind. In one study conducted by Hopfinger and Mangun (2001), the researchers noted that reflexive attention is a temporary facilitator of the mind’s neural processing of visual stimuli. Notably, the authors found that such function is present in the lower levels of cognitive processing or the higher order of cognition. In order to determine this relationship, the authors utilized a simple luminance detection that was presented with varying time intervals – short and long cue-to-target intervals. In the end, the researchers found that while the results of the study suggest the presence of reflexive attention, it also created a question regarding the effect of varying time delays in the individual’s inhibition of return. Accordingly, even though the study was conducted more than a decade ago, the methods of determining the effects of both reflexive attention and inhibition of return are echoed by several studies these days regarding the subject matter. For example, in a 2021 study conducted by Redden et al. (2021), the authors also found that the IOR has a significant effect on cognitive processing, depending on the suppression (or non-suppression) of the oculomotor system.
