The article claims that research spying on individuals' privacy is unethical. The background of the paper is based on a 1976 research by Middlemist, Knowles, and Matter. The three experimented on how the intrusion of one's space in a lavatory affects their physiological processes, resulting in delayed micturition. The research presents delayed micturition as an outcome of delayed physical arousal. Therefore, privacy determines one’s physical arousal to urinate. Despite the study’s outcome, Koocher questions its fulfillment of the APA guidelines on ethical research conduct. Also, Koocher notes that the researchers did not publish the study's cost-benefit and negative impacts analysis. Moreover, the article claims that Middlemist et al.'s research violates human dignity by disrespecting the unknowing participants privacy and being inconsiderate of vulnerable people that could have discovered they were being watched.
