Negative reinforcement involves the removal of unpleasant circumstances, allowing more chances of a repeat of the response in the future. This work uses relevant scenarios to look at target behavior functions regarding the escape from and avoidance of the aversive stimuli. In addition, there is an explanation of how the two aspects meet the law of parsimony and an illustration of their differences in the contingency diagram.
Regarding the escape response scenario, a target behavior function to escape an adverse stimulus involves Daniel’s mom telling him to wash his toys after playing. Daniel responds by hitting himself on the face with his hands, resulting in the task’s abandonment. Therefore, Daniel is reinforced by canceling the work whenever he is requested to wash toys.
