Mid-Life Crisis and Explanations for a Mid-Life Crises-Like Symptoms

Essay Instructions:

PROMPT:
Chapter 11 discusses mid-life crises during middle adulthood (40-60s). The text argues that people during this age are more likely to make lofty purchases not because they are experiencing a crisis but because they may have increased financial security and have reached the ceiling in terms of their positions which leads them to be able to afford to make such purchases. It is more related to financial security than emotional insecurity as we often think. Research since 1970s has failed to show consistent evidence of a midlife. Research does show that this is a time when positive characteristics peak:
• sense of control
• work/job satisfaction
• enhanced self-development
However, negative life events can occur but not specific to middle adulthood that could trigger a crisis.
• losing job
• divorce
• losing home
• health problems

Middle life Crisis
A middle life crisis is a transition period between 40 and 60 years, where individuals juggle between seeking self-confidence and identity. Some of them tend to succumb to feelings of depression, anxiety, and remorse due to unfulfilled expectations of a perfect life crowned by achieved goals (Global National, 2016). I have heard people talk about the midlife crisis in ted talks, where the speakers explain what it is and give solutions to individuals experiencing it.
I have interacted with individuals in the age cohort termed a midlife crisis in my community and seen some resemblance with the individuals in the video. For instance, some of them rush to start working out now, unlike in their twenties and thirties. Others are making more and more purchases to fill the gap of lacking some items in their current age. I agree that some people in my neighborhood face midlife crises while others enjoy...
