Internal Vs. External Motivation
Internal motivation refers to a kind of motivation that comes from within a person. In this form of motivation, the individual is motivated by their great desire to achieve their goals or vision. Internal motivation has been shown to be very effective at helping a person achieve their set goals (Schunk & DiBenedetto, 2020). Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, refers to motivation derived from factors outside an individual. For instance, a student may aim to score higher grades because the parents promised a reward. Psychological experts have shown that it is hard to maintain external motivation since the drive does not come from within. Therefore, I think that the most effective form of motivation is internal motivation. The reason for this belief is that an internal drive is likely to be sustained for a longer period compared to an external drive. There is also evidence showing that internally motivated people are more likely to achieve their goals than those who are externally motivated (Berridge, 2018).
