Introduction
The psychodynamic is a school of thought that originates from the father of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud. It is a collection of his theories and those of his followers termed as neo-Freudians. Some of which include; Erik Erikson, Alfred Adler, and Carl Jung. The school of thought believes that the unconscious motivates individuals' behaviors from early childhood into later life. The standard techniques in all-inclusive theories in this school of thought include; free association, dream analysis, and transference. All the above methods have the goal of reflecting what is in the patient's unconscious mind. In addition, the approach focuses on studying a client's past relationships and particularly their traumatic early childhood experiences concerning what they are currently facing in life.
Compared to other schools of thought, it is more time-consuming and requires a lot of trust and comfort between the client and counselor lest the healing does not occur. Another instance is that the approach requires changing profoundly ingrained behavior, and all this is possible if the counselor understands the client. Finally, unlike the cognitive-behavioral approach, the healing process does not rely on the following steps. Still, the next step is doable after a solved trauma before moving on to the next, considering it focuses on the unconscious mind.
Background of Psychodynamic Theories
Before the invention of his theory and techniques, Freud faced much opposition from the medical team. After abandoning his partner, Charcot, he moved from Paris and went back to Vienna to set up his private practice. Soon after, Sigmund Freud turned away from hypnosis, the standard psychiatric treatment, and focused on his theory based on free association and dream analysis. The debut of his view caused a medical and non-medical split since he supported the administration of treatment without the provision of medicine; at the time, counselor lay analysts. However, the opposition did not stop him from training psychoanalysts who letter led in the profession despite the lack of medical training. Among them was his daughter Anna Freud. By the time he published two stages of lay analysts in 1926 and 1927 that argued medicine as a practice of analysis were two different things, his theory had already spread through the UK and the USA.
