My explicit attitudes
When it comes to sexuality, whether one is gay or straight, I believe that it is a natural and deeply personal phenomenon where a person gets to understand and explore their feelings and attractions towards other people. I believe every person is entitled to love and I respect and understand people’s choices of whom to love, whether straight or gay. Also, I like and appreciate gay people as they not only know how to love, but they are also willing to publicly acknowledge who they love without fear of judgment or discrimination by society. I enjoy having friends who are straight and gay, as their friendships help me grow and enjoy life without their sexuality impeding our friendship.
Similarities/ discrepancies between my stated explicit attitudes and my resulting implicit attitudes
Based on the test, my explicit attitudes and explicit attitudes are similar in that I like both straight and gay people and have no problem interacting and being friends with them. The test also showed stability in my implicit and explicit attitudes towards treating individuals in gay relationships by others people and the law. For instance, both my perspectives agreed that gay couples should be allowed to adopt kids while business individuals should not be legally allowed to discriminate against customers based on their sexual orientation. Additionally, my liberal explicit attitudes align with my implicit attitudes align by believing that people in a same-sex relationship should have the freedom to enjoy all benefits enjoyed by heterosexual couples, such as the freedom to get married.
Contrary, my explicit and implicit attitudes differ about this topic. While I enumerated my strong liking for gay and lesbian people, the test shows that my implicit preference has slightly more appreciation for heterosexual individuals over lesbian and gay people. Additionally, the IAT test showed that in establishing the order of some data, I had a more negative implicit bias towards gay people than my explicit attitudes about them.
Contribution of the three components of prejudice to my attitude
Affective prejudice defines what people like or dislike and it influences my positive attitude and for gay people, as I believe that just like straight people, they are wonderful people that deserve love as they are beautiful, intelligent, caring, and loving. Additionally, they deserve all the legal protection offered to straight people. For example, they should enjoy marriage, have children through adoption, and purchase whatever they need from any business without facing discrimination.
