Motivation is defined in Psychology as those needs or wants that fashion a behavior towards a particular goal. Motivation can always be instigated by biological, intrinsic (resulting from internal components), and extrinsic (external) factors. Hence, hunger is a complex motivation influenced by a set of physical and external elements that interact with one another to attain satiety. This set of components that incite hunger interact in what is called the hunger-satiety cycle. The cycle comprises pre-absorptive and post-absorptive neuronal and humoral mechanisms (Plata-Salamán, 1991). A series of activities involving physical, social, external, and psychological factors, gastric contractions, nutrients, and metabolic processes motivate hunger. Consequently, eating produces satiety by activating inhibitory signals that alert individuals to stop eating when they are full (Plata-Salamán, 1991). The signals originate from the brain`s hypothalamus area: the lateral hypothalamus, the ventromedial hypothalamus, and the paraventricular hypothalamus.
