Now, imagine that you are a university psychology professor. One of your students, John Doe, was recently diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), combined presentation. He has emailed you and requested your advice and assistance with better understanding his circumstances, diagnosis, and prognosis. You will reply to John by writing an email in which you will offer him advice in the following areas.
Indicate structures of the brain that are involved and biopsychology factors that could impact his emotions, learning, memory, and motivation related to your class.
Describe ways in which his brain can perceive information from the outside world that could in turn impact his performance in your class.
Identify suggestions that you have for John to increase his chances for success in your class as well his other courses.

Dear John Doe,

            I am glad you have reached out to find out more about the condition you have been diagnosed with. ADHD is a condition that affects children and can persist into adulthood. I commend you for seeking medical attention (diagnosis) because undiagnosed ADHD in adulthood can have serious consequences (Mörstedt, Corbisiero, Bitto, & Stieglitz, 2015). In this email, I will explain to you the risk factors and causes of ADHD, the brain structures involved, the critical biopsychology factors that will influence your learning memory, emotions, & motivation, and how your brain perceives information. I will then conclude by identifying suggestions that may help increase your chances of success in your classes.

            According to the CDC (2021), some risk factors include brain injury, exposure to risks like lead during pregnancy or at a young age, alcohol and tobacco consumption during pregnancy, premature delivery, and low birth weight. However, genetics remains the most critical factor (Faraone et al., 2021). Some of the common symptoms you might experience include frequent mood swings, hot temper, difficulties in coping with stress, problems focusing on tasks or multitasking, and impulsiveness. Almost everybody has some of these symptoms at some point in their life, but ADHD is only diagnosed when the symptoms are severe.

            The manifestation of these symptoms is an indication that some parts of the brain have been affected. Recent research suggests widespread changes in the brain micro-and macro-structures (Gehricke et al., 2017). An adult ADHD diagnosis is associated with the frontal, basal ganglia, temporal, anterior cingulate, and parietal regions of the brain. As you will notice, each of these brain parts has a unique or related function. For instance, the temporal lobe processes and affects emotions; the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) hosts cognitive functions such as attention allocation, mood regulation, and emotional expression; basal ganglia are responsible for motor control. When you compare these brain functions with ADHD symptoms, you can understand the manifestation of your condition.
