Theory of Psychosexual Development
According to Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), personality development begins in infancy, and childhood events form our characters and behaviors as grownups. Throughout childhood, He alleged that each of us had to pass through a sequence of phases and that if we were not adequately nurtured and parented, we might get stuck in one. Sigmund Freud proposed that children's pleasure-seeking desires were concentrated on different body parts. The five stages of development included: oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital (Learner,2018). When it comes to understanding how we form our personalities, we can draw from Freud's theory that early experiences have a significant impact on how we perceive ourselves today.
Theory of Psychosocial Development
Erik Erikson (1902–1994) adapted Freud's ideas into psychosocial theory. Rather than focusing on sexuality, Erikson's psychosocial theory focuses on the social aspects of human development. Erikson argued that personality development occurs throughout the lifespan, not just in childhood. According to Erikson, how we relate to other people, or our "ego identity," determines our sense of self. Erikson said that we are driven by a desire to be competent in various aspects of our lives.
