Language development is a complex concept in a child's psychological development stage. A child's speech or first words are innately correlated with gestures (like waving or pointing). However, two studies from the Georgia State University psychology department have found out that twins lag in utilizing or producing those gestures compared to single children. Since girls have a higher rate of language acquisition than boys at a particular age, the lagging in speech development gets worse for twins who are boys. According to principal researcher Seyda Ozcaliskan, an associate professor at Georgia State University Department of Psychology, twins do gesture to fewer objects and produce fewer gestures than single children. Moreover, Ozcaliskan asserts that they also lag in language use, which is similarly affected by sex, with females outperforming males.
