Human being’s understanding of their environment, immediate or otherwise, is dependent on sensation and perception. The former refers to a person’s detection of stimuli from the immediate environment while the latter involves a more complex process of selection, organization, and interpretation of the stimulus. The brain plays a significant role in decoding the information gained or retrieved from the sensory organs responsible for detecting the stimulus. In line with the principles of perception, it is evident that a person’s memory is integral to their understanding of their environment. Nevertheless, there exist differences in the memory domain between children and adults. Michelene Chi’s article, Knowledge Structures and Memory Development, seeks to account for the existing differences in both the memory and metamemory domains between adult and children.
The author, Michelen T. H. Chi, gives an intricate analysis of the factors affecting memory development in human beings and the extent of their influence on the existing differences.
