Client-Centered Treatment
For most of the clients seeking mental health treatment before they decide now is time to seek therapist assistance, they have already sought help from their relatives and friends and the likelihood is that they have already given them the guidance that they think is appropriate for them. In most cases, this feels like a lecture, and it might aggravate the situation rather than help them. Well, with a client-centered type of help, they are given the room to open up, express their opinion on why they are in such a situation, and suggest the best solution rather than diagnosing and treating the condition scientifically. This is referred to as person-centered therapy (McLeod, 2019).
Client-centered treatment commonly referred to as client-centered therapy is a type of treatment where the client is the one in charge. The client is allowed to lead the discussion about their mental issue, determine what the problem is, and be able to come up with a solution by themselves. In this case, the therapist is only entitled to listen, offer support, and ensure the client adheres to the laid steps of the journey to recovery.
Client-centered therapy allows the client to discuss how they feel, and ultimately share what they feel is worth sharing with the therapist. The therapist will clarify what the client says and explain further the problems experienced by the client. Developed by Carl Rogers in the 1940s, this procedure assumes that everyone can impact change in their own life and make a difference.
Despite the multiple approaches used in person-centered therapy, they converge in similar benefits that are associated with this type of treatment. One of the significant benefits of this type of treatment is helping the client develop a stronger sense of identity and self-worth (Smith, 2020). Through the interaction with the therapist, the client can learn more about themselves and begin to realize themselves. Another notable benefit of such clients is the improvement of their self-awareness and problem-solving abilities.
