The readings have helped me realize that the perceived shame and stigma wrongly associated with addiction is all a mistake and a misunderstanding. Addiction is a medical issue just like any other disease. Substance use is a disorder that has a neurobiological basis, and those suffering from it require proper care and treatment so that they recover more quickly. It is clear from the readings that it is good to change how we think, our social attitudes, how we act and talk to people with addiction. The real problems in our society are not caused by drugs addiction but other social problems such as poverty, unemployment, and selected drugs law enforcement (TEDMED, 2021). We should not view drug addicts as the majority of drug users in our society because recreational drug users are the majority users. Understanding what drug addiction truly is has influenced change in my view of addiction. When given better options, drug-addicted people can change and improve their life.
