Studies have demonstrated that individuals usually miss essential aspects of events when they are engaged in other tasks. This phenomenon is known as inattentional blindness. There have been numerous demonstrations of inattentional blindness, which have mainly centered on naïve observers engaged in tasks they never understand. The study aimed to observe expert searchers who have experience and proven ability to detect minor abnormalities in certain types of images. In this regard, the study intended to study 24 radiologists to undertake lung-nodule detection. In the last case, a gorilla that was 48 times larger than the size of the average nodule was inserted. Although most of the radiologists were experienced in their work, more than 83 percent failed to detect the defects present in the images. Notably, they were never able to notice the gorilla that was inserted in the last image. When eye-tracking was undertaken, it was established that most of the radiologists had directly observed the area where the defect was added. In this regard, people who are operating in their expertise can also experience inattentional blindness. Therefore, the study further evaluates cases of inattentional blindness in people who are working in their expertise.
The method entailed an observation of lung-cancer images with a reconstructed stack. The experiments involved 24 radiologists with a mean age of 48. They were all given 3 minutes to check through the images, highlighting the nodules as the observers also tracked the position of their eyes.
