Discriminative Stimuli and Their Influences
For someone to behave in a certain way, antecedent variables, including discriminative stimuli and motivating operations, must influence what occurs before the targeted behavior. Stimulus discrimination occurs on several occasions in a learning setting when a learner participates in the target behavior of doing a particular task. Usually, discriminative stimuli act as condition reinforcers in several experiments, like observing responses, and it is used when the relevant primary reinforcement is effective (Edwards, Lotfizadeh & Poling, 2019). Discriminative stimuli affect students completing an assignment when the teacher is present compared to finishing a task when an educator is absent.
The discriminative stimulus in this instance is the teacher, where in the teacher's availability, the learner has to complete an assignment and participates in other predicted class-setting behaviors. Good academic performances or other reinforcing repercussions reward the previous target behavior. Once the educator leaves the class, the scholar may stop participating in the target behavior of doing the work and start other off-task behaviors like making noise or sleeping.
