Humanistic Psychology
Humanism is a psychological movement supporting the view that all human beings are unique and innately good and deserve all psychologists and psychiatrists (Henry, 2017). Unlike behavioral psychologists, who focus on people’s actions, humanistic psychologists do not ignore the basic characteristics of individuals like their thinking abilities and personal feelings. According to Hawkins (2017), humanists believe that early life experiences determine their behavior. Resultantly, humanistic psychology maximizes the growth of an individual regarding love, satisfaction, self-worth, and independence. Furthermore, humanists use a person-centered therapeutic technique that focuses on the objective of self-actualization (Hawkins, 2017). In this regard, humanistic psychologists believe that human free will always exist and people should be responsible for their personal growth and satisfaction.
Abraham Maslow’s social stratum of needs is a humanist psychology approach explaining human inspiration basing on the ability to pursue different stages of personal wants (Carducci, 2020). The approach illustrates that people are stimulated to satisfy their needs in a definite order. The eventual objective, as per this theory, is to get to self-actualization. Maslow’s classical system of needs starts from basic to advanced wants (Carducci, 2020). In this case, an individual must satisfy the needs on one level before proceeding to the next stage. From a modern psychological perspective, these levels of needs overlap, and an individual is motivated to reach higher levels. However, they continue to go after lower stages of needs in the grading system with less vigor.
The first level of Maslow’s social order is psychological wants involving basic things like water, food, shelter, warmth, and perfect health (Hale et al., 2019).
