Six Sigma Project – Measure Phase
Executive Summary
The tools included in this essay are the Black Belt, Master Black Belt and Champion. These tools were important in the Measure Phase in various ways. For instance, the Black Belt was critical in evaluating project leadership as relates to team dynamics and decision making. The Master Black Belt was essential in assessing the implementation of the project in terms of organizational practices and management structure. On the other hand, the Champion was important in examining the management of the project with regards to resource deployment, diffusing conflict, and eliminating bottlenecks. The general finding was that Google has few problems occurring except for budget and time constraints and that the project is ready to progress to the next stage since all critical tools and processes are included.
The Overarching Questions
* Precisely define what problems are occurring.
The only problems occurring are budget and time constraints: the project has a fixed budget and deadline, which may pose management challenges. While a strict budget and deadline gives the project a sense of control over expenses and time, it may also set limitations to the project. For instance, it may even overshadow quality and prevent teams from performing at the optimum level.
* How you prioritized and selected critical input, process and output measures
I prioritized and selected critical input, process, and output measures using a prioritization matrix to help in identifying as well as prioritizing key actions and critical-to-quality characteristics. Given the limitation of money and time, I employed the prioritization matrix to identify those inputs, processes, and output measures that were of most importance to the project.
* What you have done to validate the measurement system
I used the Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) to validate the measurement system. The MSA is an experimental method that determines the accuracy of an inspection tool consistent with the DMAIC tool for eliminating defects from the project process. I also employed the Pareto Chart as a visual tool to ascertain the accuracy and consistency of the measurement phase.
* What patterns are exhibited in the data
The patterns in the data suggested little variation and poor performance in project processes. Google’s project boundaries are well defined and client feedback of the entire process from start to finish is generally positive. There are few occurrences of problems and all data points to the ability of project processes to meet specifications.
* Do you believe there was an appropriate use of tools?
I believe that there was an appropriate use of tools since the company was not only able to detect various types of variations within its business processes, but was also able to solve problems in complex systems and implement client feedback to improve overall process performance.
* What tools did you use beyond each required tools? Why did you use these tools?
The tools I used beyond each required tool include the MSA, DMAIC, Pareto...
