Discouraging Adult Smoking
Introduction
Tobacco products are responsible for 6 percent of the global deaths annually, which is a matter of great concern. It has been found that by the year 2020, the mortality rate will increase by 11 percent in developing countries and by 21 percent in developed states. The impact of tobacco on the world seems to be long-lasting, and it is considered the biggest cause of more than 20 diseases. Forty percent of adults in Asian countries such as India, China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan consider their survival impossible without smoking.
Similarly, millions of Americans, Canadians, and Europeans depend on tobacco products like cigarettes for their survival. The users of cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco and shisha are not as many in number as are the users of cigarettes (Delnevo et al. 2003). These statistics paint a grim picture of the impact of smoking on human life and calls for adequate measures to combat the use of tobacco. The world’s poorest countries record the highest consumption of tobacco products. This paper proposes interventions that are required to discourage adult smokers, who are at the risk of developing chronic diseases. If they do not quit smoking, then their chances of losing their lives in the next few months or years will be high. There is a strong need to prevent the use of tobacco products among adolescent populations, with a view of its complete elimination by empowering healthcare professionals to provide effective advice and support to those who are exposed to the use of tobacco products. Increasing health promotion activities is also the need of the time.
Health Risks

Non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke kills almost 50,000 people annually in the U.S alone as measures such as ventilation cannot eliminate the risk of exposure to the Class A carcinogen.
People who smoke have more uncertain health issues compared to those who do not smoke. Some of these medical conditions become visible instantly, while others develop with time. The most common health effects of smoking are as follows.
1. Reproductive Issues
Men and women who smoke are likely to have pain in their private organs. Females can become victims of painful or irregular periods. They may have a low estrogen level, which can lead to vaginal dryness, mood swings, and fatigue. Not only women but also men and children are equally impacted by smoking. For example, in men, it can cause depression, stress, and anxiety-like complications. Similarly, children and teenagers may start living a restless life and may lose their interest in studies. In some circumstances, women have troubles getting pregnant.
2. Respiratory Issues
Compared to nonsmokers, smokers develop the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at an early age. Due to this complication, it becomes difficult for them to br...
