Why the Democratic Republic of Congo Is a Weak State
The World Bank and the United Nations consider weak states as those with poor democracy, inconsistent human rights reports, high levels of corruption, uncompetitive in the World Economic Forum, unstable political environment, and unfavorable for conducting business (Protberg, 2013). The Democratic Republic of Congo has had unstable government due to banditry, coups, rebels, and armed groups. The government forces has failed to suppress these rebels for a long time; leading to anarchy in the Eastern part of the country.
The DRC, being a growing country, cannot afford an enormous budget to support its army as compared with the United States. This makes it hard to control the vast nation and reducing the activities of rebel forces like the M23 group.
