 In today's world, the ever-changing trends in organized crimes require a well-ordered approach of handling or dealing with crimes. In 1930, the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) created the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program to give crime statistics for nationwide comparisons (Biderman & Lynch, 2012). It compiles crime statistics to be published by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). The program's task aims to generate helpful information for law enforcement institutions. The information can be used by researchers, students, the public, and the media. It includes data from most and for different law enforcement institutions in the US. The institutions submit their crime information voluntarily to the UCR program, and participation is growing.
The UCR has two significant parts, Part 1 and Part 2, criminal offenses. Part 1 are crimes related to a higher likelihood to be reported to the authorities and considered severe. These crimes are referred to as index crimes. The police directly take them, and the data collected does not necessarily include the UCR. Part 1 has two categories: violent and property crimes. Notably, violent crimes include robbery, murder, rape, and assault, while property crimes involve vehicle theft, burglary, arson, and larceny-theft. In Part 2, these mainly include crimes that are victimless or non-physical and are considered when a criminal is arrested. They may include; fraud, curfew offenses, liquor offenses, sex offenses, weapons offenses, and vandalism.
There are many data collection methods applied depending on the context, which involves open and voluntary participation. It comprises all the state, local, federal, and tribal law institutions. The FBI closely associates major law enforcement institutions to share the data. It provides agencies with a web portal and other submission options to enable them...
