The strain theory best explains the ability of an individual to commit a crime. According to theory, an individual is highly likely to commit a crime if they feel strained (Isom Scott & Grosholz, 2019). The strain is caused by their inability to achieve goals in life. It is the feeling they get from the inability to achieve goals that make them commit a crime. Although the theory does not explain specific goals that can result in an individual committing a crime, the failure to succeed in a career is the leading cause of many crimes. For instance, if an individual does not meet their career goals, they will not have enough money to cater to their needs. Such people might choose to commit criminal activities such as drug dealing, human trafficking, and theft, among others, to make money. This theory offers a perfect explanation of why many people commit crimes (Isom Scott & Grosholz, 2019). Currently, the economy has presented people with high rates of unemployment. This means that unemployed individuals have financial hardships that they can hardly deal with because they have not met their career goals. Theft and drug dealing have become a common criminal offense and can be attributed to the high unemployment rates. If people can meet their career goals in life, they will not resolve to commit criminal activities to make money. The strain theory clarifies that the failure to achieve goals in life can frustrate individuals, thus pushing them to engage in criminal activities to ease the strain.
