Cluster random sampling is achieved by the researcher first selecting groups. Using random systematic random or simple random, the researcher selects the subjects of each group. A good example is when the researcher has n interest in surveying Malaysia’s high school students’ academic performance. The researcher divides the whole population into clusters, that is, the entire population of Malaysia is divided into cities. From the cities, the researcher can then decide to select all the high school students as his subjects. He can as well use systematic or simple random sampling to select his subjects. The method is applied when to survey a large region with unknown population since it is geographically convenient (Albright, Wayne & Winston).
Cluster random sampling is easy, quick and cheap. The researcher can easily allocate their limited resources to the selected few of the entire group. It is also easy for the research to add on their sampling size. Dividing the entire population into clusters then selecting the subjects makes the subjects easily accessible. The overall advantage is that it is efficient. It can also be applied with the incorporation of multi-stage sampling.
