What will occur if everyone in society receives a comparable amount of money? Does it advance equality? Will it enable individuals to lead fulfilling lives? The goal of universal basic income, or UBI, is to give money to people in a community regardless of their financial situation or employment wage. The purpose of UBI is to create a society where people are not concerned about having enough money (Bidadanure, 2019). This topic has been debated for how many years. However, universal basic income programs benefit many people, so improving and utilizing these programs is necessary.
Even though some scholars argue whether UBI should be practiced or not, this concept is no longer new. People can trace the roots of UBI back to the 1500s. Thomas More's Utopia has already presented this concept (Chohan, 2017). And even before, leaders and prominent persons have already used this concept to solve the crisis they encountered (Bidadanure, 2019). In today's time, the idea of universal basic income is when the government regularly provides money for its citizens. UBI was established long ago, and policymakers today only need to improve it.
Universal basic income programs have already gained supporters. However, with the pandemic that the world is experiencing, UBI programs have gained more supporters than before. The pandemic has caused unemployment and has left many families with limited or no food. Thus, UBI programs have somehow saved these families from hunger, sickness, and traumas (Johnson et al., 2020). In addition, UBI programs have helped reduce poverty and income inequality. The money from these programs is enough to buy meals for a couple of weeks; thus, it is a huge help for families. In this way, families can save or allot money for other financial use. Lastly, UBI programs provide income for people with no jobs, old citizens, and other marginalized people (de Paz-Báñez et al., 2020). In all, UBI programs have several positive effects.
