Brainstorming when a team is tasked with coming up with ideas to solve a problem is a natural reaction that happens to everyone. Alex Osborn developed the term brainstorming in the 1950s. It was a specific technique that had rules of how people generate ideas. The rules are apparent and clear (Markman, 2017). However, based on studies, when groups use Osborn rules, they tend to come up with few ideas compared to individuals who developed ideas independently. Productivity loss comes by when people work together because their ideas converge. However, when they work alone, they can diverge their thinking.
One can harness both convergence and divergence to get the best results from brainstorming. It can be achieved by first letting the people work alone. It allows one to diverge on several ideas and later converge to the most appropriate ideas and add more detail. This technique gives room for creativity. The 6-3-5 method, where six people write three ideas and pass them to the other sitting on their right five times. It gives everyone room to build on other people ideas. later on, they evaluate the ideas they have generated.
It is important to take quality time while coming up with and developing the ideas. When brainstorming as a group, some people do not like uncertainty; they want the process to be done quickly and the new solution to be implemented. They are the people with the need for closure characteristic. Groups need time so that each idea is explored well. The 6-3-5 method is successful as it slows down the creative process. It tells the group in advance that evaluation will happen after everyone has generated their ideas and others have had a chance to build on them. This makes those with a high need for closure to practice patience and wait for the ideas to be developed.
It is essential to let people draw their ideas. Brainstorming is all about coming up with solutions. It makes people more biased to practical and easy solutions. It is crucial to have C-sketching as it allows people to draw rather than write. Drawing is important because it's not easy to describe spatial relations.
