Toyota is one of the global leaders in automotive manufacturing. On its global website, the company indicates that it contributes and will continue contributing to sustainability through its corporate social responsibility and environmental activities (Toyota,n.d.). Examining various topics such as leadership, ethical dilemmas, and financial performance as well as its CSR initiatives can help establish whether Toyota is truly committed to corporate social responsibility (CSR).
How does leadership influence corporate social responsibility?
Leadership plays a fundamental role in the overall performance of a company and more so, in the commitment of a company to CSR. Toyota’s President Akio Toyoda, in a recent Toyota environmental report, stated that “we all live on the same earth (Toyota, 2020).” He further stated that at Toyota, the actions to protect the earth and enhance environmental sustainability come from the view of the world as the “Home Planet.” He has been able to lead Toyota by creating CSR initiatives aimed at making the environment sustainable, such as the Toyota Environment Challenge 2050 initiative. As Schermerhorn and Bachrach (2020) reveal, great leadership is about inspiring and motivating others to achieve a shared vision or goal. Toyota’s leadership has been able to influence not only Toyota’s employees but other partners to commit to CSR.
