The traveling and tourism industry has significantly grown over the last decade, with high numbers of passengers being recorded annually across all the major airports worldwide. To attract tourists into the country, Saudi Arabia is developing a tourist location that will offer tourists a wide range of experiences, including a luxurious traveling experience. As a tourism initiative, the country is building a new international airport known as Red Sea International Airport (Ravenscroft, 2021). The airport is currently under construction, and it is expected to transform its visitors' traveling experiences when fully completed. By the year 2022, the airport is expected to open its doors for the first visitors upon completing the first phase of the project. When fully completed, the airport is expected to reach a capacity of one million passengers a year by 2030 to process 900 passengers an hour (Arab News, 2021).
The airport is located on the West Coast of Saudi Arabia, with the project's architecture largely borrowed from its natural landscape. Surrounded by the desert, the airport's textures and colors were inspired by its immediate environment, which allows it to blend seamlessly. Its surroundings also inspire the airport's form and design. A visual representation shows a series of pods shaped like dunes arranged radially from the center of the airport. Each of the five dune-shaped pods includes a departure lounge along with spas and restaurants. The spaces between the pods will be for receiving passengers. Therefore, each of the pods can fully function as a 'mini-terminal', allowing other parts of the airport to be closed during periods of low demand.
