Franklin Equipment, Ltd (FEL) is well known for its main fabrication facilities in Saint John, New Brunswick. The following has been discussed in detail concerning the case study given: criteria used to assign managers to the project teams, its efficiency and resulting problem, the importance for the project team members working together, the dilemma that Jobe faced, and what recommendation Jobe should give to Gatenby.
The criteria used to assign managers to the project teams were based on their expertise and their availability to work on a particular project given their other commitments. This criterion is important because managers without heavy present project commitments, will be assigned to the new projects, for example, a manager completing a project has high chances to be given a management position of the new project team. Selecting team members for a project according to their expertise helps meet the different needs of customers since they vary from one to the other. For instance, weather conditions, terrain, and logistical concerns create concerns from one phase to another for plant designs and operations. Furthermore, environmental and labor conditions vary from client to client and from region to region. Besides, it helps the project be delivered in time and within cost constraints since all managers are highly skilled in the apportioned area. Utilizing these criteria to choose team members results in disagreement among some managers being unable to work together. For example, Perry and Rankins were unable to corporate for the following project since Rankins, the project designer, complained that Perry, the fabrication and operations manager, changes everything he does and makes his designs, calling him out of control. In addition to this, Rankins went further and accused him of not sleeping at night to ensure that he ruins his design. On the other side, Perry complains of Rankins making him feel like an idiot because he doesn’t have a degree.
