Describe and evaluate how Pfizer is allowing employees to be more productive with its PfizerWorks.
Analyze an organization for which you work, or are familiar with, by considering the structural implications—good and bad—that the PfizerWorks approach would have in the specifics of productivity. (Think in terms of the six organizational design elements.)

Mr. Cohen, the manager, has identified a way to improve the productivity of his employees by outsourcing some of their work to other people. By allowing employees to delegate the time consuming and unimportant work like excel and PowerPoints, they can focus their energies and time on the important activities that generate higher value to the company. Through this strategy, he cuts back on the time employees ‘waste’ doing ‘grunt work’ and allow them to commit themselves to the core activities that cannot be outsourced or delegated. His system saves time and improves managing the capacity of the existent human resource available to the company. It is like assigning assistant to his employees such that they focus on activities that utilize their talents, intellect and abilities rather than doing routine tasks.
SpaceX is a company that designs and develops rockets for space exploration. It has a fairly decentralized organizational structure with each department headed by a VP. The VP serves as the manager and leader of the group to achieve its designated objective. The Pfizer work approach would have significant impact on the organization and especially the employee productivity. Most of the employees in this company are engineers who work for long hours attempting to solve various problems related to their overall goal of space exploration. Thus, some less technical work like documentation and tracking of expenses and other non-technical work can be outsourced to other people and allow the engineers to focus on their primary work which is technical.
For work specialization, the workforce would be less burdened by ‘unimportant’ tasks that are time consuming and rather focus on more complex and high value activities for the organization. The workforce would be specialized and significantly improve efficacy and quality. In regard to departmentalization, the Pfizer works approach can be replicated in each department and if it is successfully implement in one department. The roll out can start from the smaller departments which have less impact to the organizational goals and objectives as a pilot test then rolled out across the board. In regard to centralization and decentralization, the Pfizer approach integrates with the company’s structure well. Pfizer approach entails selecting a small group that can pilot the test and in the fairly decentralized SpaceX organizational structure it would be easy to sample and ascertain the efficacy of the program.
